Sign in with Google

Signing in with Google creates a wallet without a word list to look after.

M5wallet creates a standard wallet on your device and encrypts it with a secret that is split in two. Both halves are stored on servers run for M5wallet: one is released only after you sign in with your Google account, the other only after you enter your 4-digit PIN, and PIN attempts are limited. Neither half works alone, so to open the wallet on a new device you need both your Google account and your PIN. The device you set up on also keeps its own encrypted copy, which is why a PIN reset has to start from a device where the wallet is already open.

  1. On the welcome screen, select Create new wallet, then Quick Onboarding, then Continue with Google.

Starting from Add existing walletContinue with Google works too: M5wallet checks whether your Google account already has a wallet.

  2. Choose your Google account in the sign-in window. In the browser extension, this window closes after 5 minutes.

  3. At Create a PIN, enter 4 digits and select Continue.

  4. At Confirm your PIN, enter the same 4 digits and select Confirm.

  5. If you haven’t set an app passcode yet, set one now. See the passcode tips.

  6. When Your wallet is ready appears, select Enter wallet.

  1. Select Add existing walletContinue with Google, and sign in with the same Google account.

  2. At Enter your PIN, enter your 4-digit PIN and select Continue.

Attempts are limited. After wrong PINs M5wallet makes you wait before trying again, and after too many you have to reset your PIN from another device.

  3. Set your app passcode if asked, then select Enter wallet.

You can reset your PIN only from a device where this wallet is still open.

  1. Go to SettingsSecurityReset PIN, or use the wallet’s menu.

  2. Enter your app passcode.

  3. At Verify your identity, sign in with your Google account.

  4. Create a new 4-digit PIN and confirm it. New PIN Created confirms the change.

If you’re stuck at Enter your PIN on a new device, select Reset PIN there. It walks you through the same steps on your other device, then you select I’ve done these steps.

To remove the wallet from a device, open the wallet’s menu and select Log out wallet. Tick the box confirming you can still sign in to your Google account and remember your PIN, then select Logout.

  • One device can hold only one Google sign-in wallet at a time. To use a different one, log out of the current one first.
  • In the web app, Google sign-in runs through the M5wallet browser extension, so install the extension first.
  • Sign in with Apple is not available yet, although a few screens mention Apple.
