Back up your recovery phrase

Your recovery phrase is the only way to restore a seed phrase wallet on a new device, and anyone who has it controls your funds.

Until you back up, M5wallet reminds you. The first time you select Receive, open an address in the explorer, buy crypto or sign a transaction, a Backup your wallet dialog appears. Select Backup there, or follow the steps below at any time.

  1. On the home screen, select the account name at the top to open the account picker.

  2. Open the wallet’s menu and select Backup, then Manual backup.

  3. Enter your passcode.

  4. Read the four points on screen, then select Show recovery phrase.

  5. Write the words on paper, in order and with their numbers. Check every word against the screen.

  6. Select I’ve saved the phrase. M5wallet confirms with Recovery phrase backed up.

On mobile, the backup menu can also offer iCloud backup or Google Drive backup.

  • Store the paper somewhere private and protected from fire and water. Consider a second copy in a different place.
  • Never type the phrase into a website, a form, a chat or an email.
  • Never share it with anyone. M5wallet Support will never ask for your recovery phrase.
  • Don’t keep it as a photo, a screenshot, a note or a cloud document.
  • Wallets created with Google sign-in have no recovery phrase to write down. You recover them with your Google account and your PIN.
  • A hardware wallet has its own recovery phrase, which you back up from the device.
